Now that I've finally posted some pics and have this blog somewhat up and running, here's a quick glimpse into our days with two kids:
Karys is almost 3, going on 13. She is taking swimming lessons and, though she's far from doing the breast stroke, is mastering new skills every week. More importantly, she has a great time and gets a lollipop after each lesson, which is an awesome way to start the dinner hour. She's also signed up for Gymboree, although at nearly age 3, she is now clearly far too cool to play along with the goofy games and simply enjoys being able to run around like a banshee. That's ending soon, thankfully, because I think Daddy might prefer water-boarding over being subjected to many more days full of Gymbo songs.
Karys' current favorite pasttimes include playing the Big Mommy or teacher to her baby dolls ("Ruby," "Baby Halloween," and "Baby Grandpa"--all girl dolls, I should note) and spending a significant amount of time trying to convince her parents she is our "Big Mommy." She is--as always--a fantastic big sister and, after a good month of letting us know she wanted "that baby" to be a girl and refusing to say the name "Jack," seems to have accepted and even embraced the fact that she has a baby brother (I think she may have figured out having a brother was a good way to keep her crown as Daddy's Little Girl). She's the first to get his swing going if he starts crying, and is adorably adult in the way she'll continue what she's doing (chatting and carrying around baby Grandpa, for example) while giving his bouncy seat a good push or two. Thanks to Karys, many drips of spit up that would probably have just stayed on my arm have been lovingly sopped up by her napkin...or a random dirty sock she found on the floor.
She is in a new school with a class full of 3- and nearly 4-year olds, and is doing great. She might be the smallest one in the room, but she takes absolutely no flak. I do not fear for her safety. On an academic note, she is pointing out the letter "K" wherever we go, and is pretty good at spotting Bs, Os, Fs, and Ws too. Within the week we expect her to be reading Shakespeare to Jack.
Speaking of Jack, he's HUGE! He may have started out at a puny 6lbs, 14 oz., but at his 2 month checkup he weighed 13 lb., 10.5 oz. I suspect he's well over 14 lbs now...which is to be expected, since he's still eating at least every 3 hours (this could be problematic, as I am going back to work in 2 weeks). We're still keeping Mylicon in business because the poor kid screams every time he toots, but I got a great tip to eat Beano with my meals and it seems to have helped. Regardless, I'm not taking any chances and am popping it like candy.
His eyes are beginning to lighten up, and they still look blue! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he got his Daddy's eyes, but I guess we won't know for sure for a few months. The best part is, he's SMILING like crazy these days. The trick is, stick him on the changing table. Nine times out of ten, you'll get a huge grin before the diaper change is over. And, he's started cooing more and "talking" back to me. It really is the best reward for all the sleep deprivation. It can be the middle of the night and I can be exhausted and covered in spit-up and cleaning a poopy diaper, but there's no way a grin from him won't put a smile on my face.
So, that's it for now. Two beautiful kiddos, and an insanely busy life. We're just trying to keep up and enjoy the journey!

Hey Leyna... it might look like I'm commenting as you, but I can't figure out how to get it to comment as me! I guess I need to specifically be invited by you or something?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I LOVE your blog! Who is Karys taking swimming lessons with? I'm going to get the boys lessons soon and trying to compare prices, etc.
Maybe this weekend we can get together or sometime next week for dinner or an afternoon...
Oops! forgot to say that this is Emily!!
